This week has been all about loose ends again, but metaphorically this time.

Our guild’s annual Holiday Exhibition and Sale is coming up in a couple weeks and I have just one more week to finish up those last pieces I signed up to bring: finishing the last of those opphamta hanging cloths – one for each season;

Soaking "Summer"

fringing and washing said hanging cloths;

I move pieces around from one venue to another to keep things fresh and interesting. These have to be retagged and noted in the inventory.

Sometimes I put something in the sale that I’ve had around for a while and now its time may be right, its color trending now more than when I made it. You never know when someone will come in looking for just that color or just that piece.

All these loose ends will eventually get tied down. One by one, I check them off my list, pack the pieces in a box, and hope for the best.

One more loose end I tied up recently was my plan to set up a Facebook page. I know I am late to the game on that one, but two weeks ago I finally launched the JeanWeaves page. There I can post quickly what is coming off the loom, what is available in my Etsy shop, and share other fiber arts links as I find them, while continuing to blog here.

So check out JeanWilliams.JeanWeaves on Facebook. And if you like what you find, follow the page for future updates.

As I’m working on all these loose ends, I contemplate—what’s next on the loom? What direction to I want to head in now? Stay tuned!

2016 Holiday Exhibition and Sale Postcard

The annual Holiday Exhibition and Sale for our local Columbia Weavers and Spinners Guild has just finished. Those participants selling, and many fellow guild members besides, put in hours preparing our wares for the big weekend and so enjoy each other’s company for the three day event.

The wall of scarves

The wall of scarves

I only do this one local event each year and I have great respect for those who sell at multiple events throughout the season. Just the set-up and take-down require a lot of energy, muscle, and forethought—how best to display and how best to store for another event. But before the weekend ever arrives, there is also all the loving labor that goes into each piece.

The ever popular towel display

The ever popular towel display

Those of us who produce to exhibit and sell soak up the inspiration of seeing how others use their talents. And we usually support each other generously and treasure each item we bring home!

And of course we take notes for 2017. Always planning ahead. Always room for improvement. Isn’t inspiration great!

Have you been to any local art fairs lately?

What a weekend! Lots of work, but oh so worth it!

The 26th Annual Holiday Exhibition and Sale for the Columbia Weavers and Spinners Guild is over. We had a great turn-out and lots of laughter and camaraderie throughout the three day event.

It’s an exhibition because we enjoy showing the community at large what we do and how we do it. There are demonstrations for two of the three days and we invite people to try their hand at the loom and the drop spindle. And it’s a sale because we want to share the work of our hands. It is so important to pass along the fiber passion to others.

Over the years, the popularity of various crafts has waxed and waned. When I began weaving in earnest, in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, weaving was very popular and we were blessed to have a weaving store in town for classes and supplies and a dedicated weaving school not too far away. There were numerous weaving publications and books available, and weaving yarn was relatively easy to find.

The store has since closed and the school moved to the west coast. Conferences are still enthusiastic but smaller in scope. Knitting and crocheting are now the crafts du jour, and while I miss some of the availability of weaving events, I appreciate other fiber arts too! And it makes me value those exciting opportunities when I do get to talk about weave structures, fiber twist, yarn sourcing, and finishing tricks.

We are heading into the busiest time of the year for many. I hope you get an opportunity to enjoy a fiber event in your neighborhood before the end of the year, and a chance to share your fiber passion with a new learner.

CWSG Holiday Exhibition and Sale

CWSG Holiday Exhibition and Sale

This is always an exciting time of year. Not only is fall my favorite season, but the upcoming holidays hold the promise of family get-togethers and the warm memories of past celebrations. And of course, as a weaver, it’s the fruition of a year at the loom.

Many groups sponsor art and craft sales ahead of the holidays. My local guild, Columbia Weavers and Spinners Guild, has been putting up a Holiday Exhibition and Sale for over 25 years now and it affords us the opportunity to ooh and ahhh over each other’s artistry.

I am always amazed at the breadth and variety of items that come in, everything from luscious camel handspun, delicate beaded jewelry, baskets that speak of the grasslands from which they came, and of course handwoven shawls, scarves, towels, table coverings, and rugs. There are always surprises and submissions that take our breath away. What inspiration!

This event is the culmination of a year’s worth of work for many of us. Some of our members participate in multiple sales, but some just do this one event. The community is so supportive each year and it charges our creativity for the next year.

So I invite you to come join us if you are in mid-Missouri next weekend! Submerse yourself in fiber art and be inspired! Contact me for more information. I’d love to meet you there!

Our  local guild’s Holiday Exhibition and Sale has come and gone. What an inspiring weekend! I am always awed by the variety and quality of artwork that all the members share.

We had a lot more wall art this year, felted pieces as well as hand-made paper. One of our members needle-felted playsets for small hands — adorable landscapes for ducks, hedgehogs, and turtles. Another member repurposed linen clothing into scarves dyed with rust (yes!) and embellished with stitching; so creative!

And of course, we had a colorful collections of towels that seemed to fly out the door. I selected an exquisite Scandinavian-style linen towel to come home with me. Yes, we some of our own best customers!

I am also humbled, knowing that a guild like this is something to be treasured. Not everyone has this kind of support and inspiration, not to be taken for granted. I wish all weavers were surrounded by an inspiring, encouraging fiber family, if not locally, than at least over the net.

May your fiber connections bring you inspiration as the fall quiets into winter. Stay warm!

This is it!

Columbia Weavers and Spinners Guild Holiday Exhibition and Sale 2014

After months of threading, weaving, hemming, meeting, and planning, this is it — our local guild’s annual Holiday Exhibition and Sale is here!

We’ve been doing this exhibition for 25 years now. Out of a guild averaging 100 members, 20-25 usually submit items to show and sell. Many other members have demonstrated, greeted, answered questions, and generally hung out at the museum for the weekend. We enjoy each other’s company!

And this is one of the ways we reach out to our community to show them what we do and how we do it.  Many people have only a vague idea of what weaving, spinning, felting, or paper-making involve. This is our chance to show them. It’s a lot of work, but also a lot of fun.

There’s everything from handwovens (of course!) to alpaca fiber, ornaments to jewelry, baskets to handmade paper. If you are in the Columbia, Missouri area this weekend, stop by to see what we have. Details are at http://www.cwsg.missouri.org/holidaysale  We’d love to meet you!

Columbia Weavers & Spinners Guild, Textiles, Weaving

The past month has been a whirlwind of activity around our local Columbia Weavers and Spinners Holiday Exhibition and Sale. This was the 24th annual exhibition for us and a lot of energy goes into making it happen. A lot of energy comes out of it too!

Sale Table 2013

Creativity encourages more creativity! We always enjoy seeing what others in the guild are making and we joke about being our own best customers. One member will encourage another as we bring in towels, runners, scarves, rugs, and jewelry. Some have worked all year for this one event; for others, this is one exhibition among many. Regardless, it comes together for three days of delightful fiber fun! And we all come away with ideas and plans for our next project at the loom and spinning wheel.

Do you have a fiber event coming up in your area? Check it out for some unique gift ideas and support your local fiber artists!
